The Colors of Christmas
Colors of Christmas. Most of these colors and their meanings originated from western/northern European traditions and customs, when Christmas was in the middle of the cold dark, winter and these colors helped them remember as they waited for Spring again.
Green
Christmas Holly
The Evergreen plants and trees, like the Holly, Ivy, Mistletoe, Fir, and Yew trees have been used for thousands of years by the ancients to celebrate, decorate and brighten up homes and dwelling places during the long dark winter.
The bright colors served to remind and assure people that spring would come and that winter wouldn’t last forever!
Today the most common use of green at Christmas are Christmas Trees.
Red
The early use of red at Christmas were the apples on the paradise tree. It symbolized the fall of Adam in the Garden of Eden.
Holly berries were also chosen to ornament nativity scenes and represented the blood of Jesus when he died on the cross.
Gold
Gold as the color of the Sun and light – was a very necessary reminder in the dark of winter. likewise both red and gold are the colors of fire that keep warm.
It also was one of the gifts given to baby Jesus and represented the star of BethlehemÂ
White
White is often associated with purity and peace in western cultures. The snow of winter is also very white!, the angels were clothed in white, likewise Jesus was swaddled in white.
Blue
Blue in paintings was used to represent the color of the sky and heaven.
